Why a Booklet?

On past bike tours, a Booklet has provided participants with the most important general things about Ecotopia Biketour, but it also contained a specicif day-by-day route schedule, overview maps and practical tools/manuals (like techniques for consensus decision making, basic words in multiple languages, etc.). Here's the example from 2013

The Booklet was ready before the start of the tour, so that people could print it out, read it at home or during their travel to the tour and always have it with them on the tour as well. "Spontaneiuos" participants that were "picked up" on the route could use the Booklet to quickly inform themselves about the Biketour Project.
From a 2012 participant: This year the tour crossed two national borders – I witnessed one of these crossings
during my stay. It went along pretty unimpressive: Just a sign on the road. The topic of borders wasn't discussed
at all in our group, not even the question to some of us, whether they were even able to cross these borders easily with
their passports. Now this can actually say something about a group of people for whom national borders just „don't count“,
which I consider a healthy state of mind. Nevertheless, leaving these powerful constructs totally out of the view is
obscuring a dark part of present-day society, as well as important events of the past.
What we do, one Saturday a month, is cook for people. Our small team, joined by an extremely enthusiastic crowd of volunteers, prepares, cooks and serves meals to all the hungry mouths that come to enjoy the dinner.

We try to reach as many homeless and poor people as possible and it's great to see that every time we have more and more new guests coming from the underprivileged community of Berlin.

However, the dinner is open to everyone and this is what makes it so special. It gives the possibility to the average Joe to sit next to a homeless person and enjoy a meal together. It also works the other way around, where a homeless person can get in touch with someone they otherwise wouldn't have a chance to meet.

The poor/homeless community is a very segregated community and their daily interactions revolve around their fellow peers and social workers. They very seldom have the chance to venture outside these circles, so having a venue where they can meet people of other social circuits and talk to them and tell them about their lives and interests and passions is of great value to them. Coming to this dinner you give them the possibility to shine, even if only for one evening a month.

So far...
12 people from the Europe wide Biketour Collective met in Berlin in the snow for the annual Winter Meeting. You can read the agenda and a summary of the minutes here...

As you can see from these pages, many things are still up for debate- so if you have some ideas - make your self a login and add them to the relevant pages or contact info@ecotopiabiketour.net.... and remember 'You are the Biketour!!'

So why another Biketour??
# Because we believe in DIY, slow travel and Doing it Ourselves!
# Because we have a 23 year legacy of creating incredible experiences / skills sharing / self organising / experiential education ... and we want to do it again!
# Because we want to use our energy and momentum to further the campaigns that matter to us most
# Because we want to learn from the existing social and activism projects that are happening all over Europe NOW!
# Because we want to make things happen - and believe we can do that together
# Because you know it will be the adventure of 2013!

This Years Theme
THEME

Brainstorm from the recent Winter Meeting:::::

* WHAT; Migrant Struggles; Fortress Europe; physical borders and ownership of space; social; psychological; on and offline borders; the virtual and cultural borders.
* HOW; by having a strong focus(s) on what we can achieve; being sensitive to local border perception.Visiting historical and modern day border struggles and traces.
* Action suggestions raged from joining up with existing actions such as the Berlin Wall / East Side Gallery or refugee protests; creating moc border control points; bespoke passports; comparing policies; finding commonalities and sharing skills and cultures, stories; recording and documenting them as radio / video / blog posts and e-activisim tactics.
* Slogan words brainstorm: commons / community / borders, boundaries and beyond / recycling borders / rethink borders / cultural exchange /granica, hranic, Granit, Grenze, granični / mapping, remap borders /reclaim / open (your borders, boundaries) / identities / identify your borders/boundaries / .. of the commons / geh an deine Grenze(n)! / Allmende / iron wheels / limits / crossing / terre / pedal movement / paddle / libre (freedom) / movement (body, social)

We have a consensus about 'Borders, Boundaries and Beyond' as a (broad) theme, but need to focus snappy slogan and focus one one or some of the above suggestions, depending on the projects and campaigns we wish to highlight for 2013.

* Some Suggestions about Discussions or Reflections on Borders:
** the dialectics / relations between borders (peripherie) and their centers
** ....

Biketour 2013 is cycling for a slogan!
We are looking for a slogan, preferably something positive and imperative eg "cycling towards degrowth!"

Check out some ideas on the 2013 Slogan page

Route Ideas
This year the tour is likely to
* start in ((north)/northeastern Germany (most likely Berlin, but could also be somewhere at the coast)
* end somewhere in the wide region between the adriatic and the carpathian mountains, between the tatra and northern dinaric alps
This rough decision was taken during the Winter Meeting 2013. During the following month, the route will be concretised in order to have "skeleton".

See the 2013 route page for
* ideas for places to visit, routes, contacts (add yours, too!)
* maps with route ideas and existing 'borders'

2013 Aims
There have been many discussions about Aims & Sub Campaigns that the BT wish to support ...some of thoses can be added here.

Things needed for biketour
Collective Equipment
Biketour as a collective "has" some collective stuff (pans / trailers), which are collectively transported and used during the tour. During the rest of the year, these things are stored in different places and should all come together again by the start of the next tour. Things used in 2012 and planned to use in 2013 can be found on the 2013 Equipment page. Please update this page with the things you have and write how they can get to the starting point of the tour!

Private Stuff
Every individual joining the tour will have to use some private stuff. See page what to bring for ideas about what participants need.

Additional things
The tour lives from its different people and all the (material and immaterial) things that these people bring and share. On the 2013 Equipment page you can announce what kind of additional things you will bring to the tour. This can help us to make sure in advance that we won't find ourselves in the strange situations of having 25 guitars but no single bike pump ;). You can also find some inspirations on what to bring.

Food
Food on the Biketour cannot be bought beforehand for and transported over more than two months. We need to buy things in between. It is always challenging to get food that matches criteria like vegan, local, ecolocical, no-cooling-needed, nutritous and from a production/distribution facility worth supporting. Help us to spot places beforehand on our 2013 Food page!

Media (Films, Books, ...)
Watching films and reading books/(maga)zines/etc. can help us understand certain local histories and backgrounds. Here's 2013 Media Library where you can collect all media that you think is useful for the understanding of the regions we pass through or this years theme. (Or just for sharing your favorite film/book...). It would be great if you could take the media with you that you put on the wiki, but of course someone else can get them, too.

Print Material On the Road
* 2013 Booklet: including schedule, description of places
* small language book
* maps?
* stickers?

check and keep BT_2013_advertising_material updated :D

Propaganda
* Where to publicize it
** some ideas on last year's page [Biketour 2012]
** put new ideas here!

Get involved!
See the website's Get Involved Page for common things to help with. If you pick one or come up with something new: Down here is space to organise or share your work with others!

Creative Work
* logo
* graphics - check and keep BT_2013_advertising_material up to date
* visualisations
* maps
* 2013 Booklet
* ...?

Translation
We are always looking for translators - if you spreak the local language of any of the places we willl be passing through - please get in touch:
info[at]ecotopiabiketour.net or see the 2013 Text that needs translating page.

2013 Funding
We are currently seeking funding towards the 2013 Biketour
See the Fundraising page

On the tour: Topics for Discussions or ad-hoc workshops
* Making a Rocket Stove
* Offline and online life: Why do so few people care about their online behaviour even though they are very stricly supporting alternative ways of living offline and even though they are socio-critical in the offline world?
* Online Security and the Right to Informational Self-Determination
* Corporate Design: Do we also need this? Or should we as critical and alternative people reject the idea that a neat, sterile, clean and reproducible logo should "brandmark" all our publications and even daily items? Do we limit our ways of artistic expressions by trying to produce recognisable media? What are the general psychological rules behind (corporate) design and why does it play a big role in capitalism?

1)

Route update:

A few concrete things are:

Will begin in (or near to) Berlin!
Our kick off days are likely to be the weekend of the 12th July
We will pass through Vienna in late July / early August
The route could then EITHER curve slightly west from Vienna to the adriatic coast [...] OR curve east to Romania
Something like: Berlin / German Polish Border / Czech republic / Vienna / Slovakia Hungary Border / Hungary / Novi Sad / Serbia / Romania
We are trying to incorporate a little bit of the Danube and the Iron Curtain Trial

We are still open for suggestions of groups, projects, actions and communities to join, that are related in some way to this years theme of ‘Borders’, 'Global Justice', ' or just a really amazing place/project that could do with a hand or we could offer relevant skills share...

Check out the Route page of the wiki for projects that we are already aware of....or at least the public ones ;) ....we obviously cannot possible visit them all - but still wanted to share this resource... made by you!

http://btwiki.ecobytes.net/2013_route_page

For more sensitive suggestions please email us and state if you would prefer them to be kept off the wiki / website / public map, and out of the web.

If you would like to help with the route planning get in touch!

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

2)

Funding Update

Unfortunately - due to unforeseen circumstances - we did not get the funding we were banking on for this year, leaving the coordination crew...that's us... slightly more panicked than before ;)

If you think you can help with writing funding applications, or buy holding a soli-party in your area - please check out this page:

http://btwiki.ecobytes.net/Fundraising and http://www.ecotopiabiketour.net/?page_id=674

3)

Call for Translators!!:

We need translators for this mailing list, our website, flyers and printed materials for the countries we are passing though or near including:::::

German / Polish / Czech / Slovak / Hungarian / Serbian / Croatian / Slovene / Romanian / Bulgarian / Romani and also French / Spanish / Portuguese / Catalan / Italian ... or any other local language you can translate!!

Please contact us if you might be able to help with future translations!!!

Or you can keep an eye on this page: http://btwiki.ecobytes.net/2013_Text_that_needs_translating

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

4)

Call for Artists & poets

We are always looking for illustrators or graphic artists that can design us some flyers or illustrations for the website pages, booklets, stickers, logos... preferably using Free Libre Open Source Software http://btwiki.ecobytes.net/Suggestions_for_FLOS_biketour_IC_tools

We also need slogans for this year. Other than the "theme" (i.e. "borders"), the slogans should be a short and catchy sentence, expressing something positive and active (e.g. "Cycling for change"). We can use all your creativity on our publications, paint them on banners, etc. There can be different slogans in different languages, too!

See our wiki pages fro some inspiration: http://btwiki.ecobytes.net/Biketour_2013 and send ideas to info@ecotopiabiketour.net

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

5)

Other ways to get involved:

Two of us are currently based in Berlin, if you are in Berlin and could help with the organising in some way – do get in touch!

We also hope to organise regular open meetings that you could attend to find out more or maybe see you at this Friday's Critical Mass! (20:00, Heineplatz, Berlin).

For other ideas of ways to get involved look here: http://www.ecotopiabiketour.net/?page_id=49

Please remember this is an open list with a growing membership - so it is best to post to info@ecotopiabiketour.net, where all the info will be incorporated into the planning, and everybody's inboxes will be much happier! ;)

1)

http://btwiki.ecobytes.net/2013_route_page

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

2)

Finanzas

http://btwiki.ecobytes.net/Fundraising y http://www.ecotopiabiketour.net/?page_id=674

3)

Necesitamos traductoras!!:

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

4)

Buscamos artistas y poetas

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

5)

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Other texts that need translating are pages on our website - such as the 'home' page - if you would be up for doing some of these pages then let us know!
