This page should serve as an overview over the different options to travel to the Biketour using public transportation. You can add here all the information about bus, train and ferry connections throughout Europe that might help getting to one of the places that the Biketour passes.

== Where to find information ==

On [http://www.bahn.de/p_en/view/index.shtml Deutsche Bahn], you can search for train connections throughout Europe. There is some limited information about whether they take bikes.

On [https://loco2.com/ Loco2], you can search and book train connections throughout Europe to find the cheapest connection. Note that sometimes it calculates very long stays at the stations, so a better connection would be possible. I think there is no bike option to book.

On [http://www.checkmybus.com/ CheckMyBus], you can search coaches throughout Europe. Note that Eurolines goes almost everywhere, but generally does not take bikes.

[http://wikitravel.org/en/Main_Page WikiTravel] always has some advice how to get into a certain country.

== How to get to the Balkan region from different places in Europe ==

=== From central Europe / via Beograd ===

Traveling from central Europe to the Balkan normally involves passing through Beograd, passing either Zagreb or Budapest on the way, as this is where the main road and train connections go.

[http://www.orangeways.com/en/ OrangeWays] operates coaches from Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Croatia, Slovenia, Austria and the Netherlands to Budapest. They accept bicycles for a fee of 7 euros, but they have to be disassembled. The internet is full of stories where the coaches have been cancelled and no refund was given, so it doesn’t sound like a very reliable service.

There are two trains per day from Budapest to Beograd (one of them coming from Praha), with a connecting train that splits in Niš with one half going to Sofia and the other half going to Skopje. There is also one train per day from Beograd to Thessaloniki, but it isn’t synchronised with the train from Budapest. Search the connections on [http://w3.srbrail.rs/zsredvoznje/?lang=en Serbian Railways]. The train from Praha/Budapest to Beograd takes bikes (but they have to be reserved), all connecting trains from Beograd officially don’t, but it is likely that it is still possible somehow.

== General information about travelling within the Balkan region ==

In many countries of the Balkan area, trains generally don’t go any faster than 40 km/h, so coaches are faster but usually slightly more expensive. Trains are usually relatively cheap, so booking them last-minute at the station is still an acceptable option. For example, the standard fare from Zagreb to Sofia is about 50 euros.

There is a ticket called the “Balkan Flexi Pass” that enables you to take all the trains in Romania, Serbia, Bosnia, Macedonia, Greece, Turkey, Montenegro on a certain number of days within one month. Only people who are not residents of those countries can buy the ticket. Online you usually only find the 1st class ticket, which is more expensive, but if you buy it at the counter, you can also get the 2nd class ticket. On [http://www.serbianrailways.com/active/en/home/glavna_navigacija/putnicki_saobracaj/medjunarodni_saobracaj/cene_prevoza_v01.html Serbian Railways], you can find the prices. A ticket that is valid on 5 days within 30 days costs 53 Euros for people up to 25 years old and 88 Euros for everyone else.

There are several trains per day from Beograd. Officially they don’t take bikes, but it might still be possible somehow. The journey takes 4 to 6 hours and costs less than 10 euros.

=== Priština ===

Getting into Kosovo by train is complicated. There are two daily trains from Kraljevo in Serbia to Mitrovica, about 40 km north of Priština. There is only one train per day from Beograd to Kraljevo, and you will have to spend 6½ hours at night in Kraljevo to wait for the train to Mitrovica. Taking a bike is officially not allowed, but might still be possible somehow.

Getting there by coach also seems to be complicated. Eurolines offers a [http://www.eurolines.de/en/international-bus-lines/fahrplaene/buslinien-deutschland-kosovo/ line] from Germany, but they don’t take bikes and you cannot book it online. There are apparently coaches from Macedonia, Albania and Montenegro.

=== Route possibilites from spring meeting 2014 ===

At the spring meeting in Thessaloniki in March 2014 we came to the following outlines of possible routes for 2014, based on the knowledge and/or contacts of a few projects we had. We aimed for about 1500 km in the outlines, which will surely become longer anyway once we fix more exact routes.
There are two possible starting points: either on the western Balkan coast in Montenegro/Crna Gora close to Albania or in Sofija. There are also two possible final destinations, those being the two major big cities: either Athens or Istanbul. This makes up for 4, actually 5 of the following graphs, one of them trying to be both in Montenegro and Sofija, thus also a bit longer. The 6th option is a round trip from Thessaloniki through the northern neighbouring countries and back.
All of those are preliminary, based on only few contacts, so anyone who could contribute any arguments as to why we should or should not go to a certain area/choose a certain route please post a comment here below the links.

The route and theme of this year's tour is not yet decided but we are looking to visit projects, join up with grassroots campaigns, NGOs and social movements and communities relevant to structural (economic/political) or personal (e.g. poverty as a result of austerity) crises and how people are finding creative solutions to coping with its effects or fighting against it. We will also revisit themes that we have seen in previous biketours such as 'degrowth', public debt, austerity, economic refugees, minorities and solidarity.

What we do know is that we will be organising the tour from Thessaloniki in Northern Greece from March and will begin cycling in July, or possibly the beginning of August. Where we head to will depend on projects and opportunities we find to visit - and this all depends on the ideas that come from everyone....

If you can think of any places / people / communities / projects / activists in the southern Balkans area that we should visit to learn from, take part in actions or to lend a hand in some way, then put them on the list below or email team-2014@ecotopiabiketour.net (or both!). Dear ecotopians,

we just finished our autumn meeting this year to discuss how we will organise ecotopia biketour 2014 - any contributions are welcome - and one of the points agreed there was that we will find a date and time for the SPRING MEETING as kick-off on next year's tour early enough so people can plan to be a part of it.
The spring meeting will focus on the topic of the biketour, how we want bt days to be structured e.g. how long do we want to stay at projects and how far do we want to go, and of course route options.

We have now set a date and place for the SPRING MEETING:

Thessaloniki, Greece - where the tour will be co-ordinated from.
13-16th March

Concrete ideas in WHICH SPACE in a city it could take place are still being discussed. We have a potential venue, but if you do know of anywhere which could host meetings or people, write your suggestions here....

There will be places to stay for the Spring Meeting. The idea is to stay for as long as you can/want, not to feel like you have to come for all four days. Also we hope to find space so that people can stay on after to help with co-ordination if they'd like to. What accommdation there will be for biketour coordinators will become clearer in the beginning of March.

; How to make food for a large group: During the Biketour you will be responsible for preparing food for the group. Not many people have experience in dealing with food for such a large group so no-one is going to expect you to be an expert, but you will be expected to have a go. Whatever you make, not everyone will like it - it will be too spicy for someone, too salty for someone else, too garlicky for someone else etc, but the point of taking turns to make dinner is that everyone has the experience of cooking for the group some days and on others the possibility to sit back and relax after cycling. When preparing food for the Biketour, there are six main things to think about:

; Quantity: There is no firm rule for quantities of food per person, so it's better to ask someone more experienced.
: In the evenings it is better to have too much than too little, as the leftovers can be eaten for breakfast, but on at least one occasion this has become a little extreme.
* If we have food left over from breakfast or lunch it can be difficult or impossible to carry, so please don't buy too many foods which can't be carried, such as dairy products, or which might spill in the trailer, such as honey.

; Economics: There will be a limited budget for food so please try to stick to it. There are a few guidelines to help with this:
* Don't buy tinned food if a dry version is available. Beans can be soaked in plastic bottles whilst they are being carried in the trailer, which saves on money and environment-damaging packaging.
* Avoid exotic and out-of-season fruit and vegetables.
* Less processed food is generally cheaper (and healthier).
* Try to buy more filling food rather than treats which people can buy themselves.

; Waste :
* Don't buy anything packaged if an unpackaged version is available
* Buy glass bottles (preferably returnable) rather than plastic and try to avoid tetra-paks altogether as they can't be recycled.
* You can empty the contents of returnable bottles into your own water container and return the bottle straight away.
* Paper packaging is better than plastic because it biodegrades.
* Try to avoid getting plastic bags with your shopping.

; Food miles/local economy: When making your favourite [[recipes]], be flexible about the ingredients and try substituting more local ingredients than you usually use. Try to support the local economy by buying directly from producers or from small shops and markets. Avoid supermarkets at all if possible - these put smaller shops and markets out of business and cannot buy from small local producers because they need to deal in huge quantities of food to keep their costs low. They also sell tasteless fruit and vegetables because they are bred to be big and shiny, not to taste good. For more on the problems of supermarkets, see the 'food & agriculture' research of http://www.corporatewatch.org. Often you can find farms on the way selling fruits and vegetables and herbs, you can't get it more direct!

; Ethics: All meals on Biketour should be vegan, and other dietary requirements should be taken into account depending on the participants. Vegans don't eat any products from animals, such as meat, fish, eggs, ham, milk, cream, cheese, or yoghurt, and most eat no honey. In certain products it is necessary to look out for less obvious ingredients such as whey powder eg. in vegetable margarine. For breakfast, as long as there are some vegetables or fruits and vegan spreads (such as jam, peanut butter, tahini, vegetable margarine, some mustard) everything should be fine. Please make sure there is enough for everyone before taking a large portion or seconds for yourself. Think of people who aren't present when food is ready because they are busy with another task and keep them some from food aside.
